Hurricane Sandy

25 Oct

So here I am in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, and feeling very grateful. Our home remains standing and all that surrounds it is untouched. OurĀ  beautiful state of NJ was however devastated. To the cynics out there, no NJ isn’t just made up of a foul smell, thank you very much! NJ is made up of great people, and amazing towns, and neighborhoods, just like any other state I guess….and let’s not forget the Jersey Shore….and no, I don’t mean the crap you see on the show…..The Jersey Shoreline was totally wrecked by Sandy…boardwalks, businesses, amusement rides, piers, homes…..Atlantic City…..much of it was destroyed. I remember my first US vacation….since I’m Canadian, I have to be specific, I was 13. My parents took me to the Jersey shore, Wildwood to be exact….it was great!! I remember having an amazing tan—it was the 80s, tans were mandatory! I still have pictures from that trip….Sadly, I can’t share the same spot with my son…..for now….It’ll probably be a few years before South Jersey is back on its feet, if there isn’t another hurricane next year! Sigh…..NJ wasn’t the only spot that got hit badly….Cuba, Haiti, and other states along the way….and New York city. The images of cars overflowing from a flooded underground garage in the financial district were enough to make my jaw drop….as well as the subway…..the south bound train tracks were completely flooded….the damage is likely to run in the millions of dollars, if not more….Well, thanks Sandy for packing a punch we in the North East will never forget. I’m grateful for what we have, and sad for the many who lost loved ones and all they own. I hope you slowly make your way back to some semblance of normalcy. My thoughts are with you. Sending you positive vibes.
